Why More Women Are Needed In Politics
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a significant trend of more and more women choosing to get involved in politics. Starting with Hillary Clinton’s run for president in the 2016 election to an unprecedented number of women, and, particularly women of color, running for office and winning seats in the United States Congress during the 2018 Midterm Election to even more women and women of color running for president and congress during the 2020 General Election, and even the first woman of color becoming the first female Vice President-Elect. While the trends we’ve been seeing lately with more women getting involved in politics have certainly been inspiring, there is still a need for even more women to get involved in politics going forward. Here are some of the reasons why we need more women in politics and why it’s important that more women get involved in politics:
Women: The Underrepresented Majority
Unlike other disadvantaged groups in society, women tend to make up at least half the population, if not more, in every society in the world. In the United States, women make up 51.1% of the population, but only make up about one quarter of legislators and have accounted for exactly 0 presidents in the U.S. Therefore, despite making up more than half of the population, women still aren’t included at the top decision-making tables in our country. This makes women the underrepresented majority in the U.S. and in the world.
The Inclusion of Women Will Help To Make Politics Accessible To All
One of the reasons why more women are needed in politics is because, seeing as women make up the largest disadvantaged group in the United States, by making politics more accessible for women, other groups will automatically be included as well. In other words, making the political landscape more inclusive and accessible to women will also allow for more people from other minority groups, such as people of color, New Americans, LGBTQ+ people, and so on to be included in politics as well and will help to bring us closer to a democracy that is actually representative of the American people and that is inclusive rather than exclusive.
The Role of Young Women in the Future of Politics
Lastly, the role of young women plays a very important part in the future of politics. While girls tend to be self-confident when they are younger, as they grow up, their confidence often starts to diminish, making it harder for them to aim for the top leadership roles in our country. That’s why educating and reaching out to young girls and teaching them leadership skills and the importance of being leaders at a young age is crucial in order to help ensure that more women will be looking to run for office and to get involved in politics in the future. If we want the future of politics to be more equitable and representative of the American population than it is now, then encouraging and supporting young girls and women at a young age and giving them the resources they need to become leaders in their communities is extremely vital.
