New American Women In Politics
Updated: Dec 16, 2020
As a nonpartisan civic leadership nonprofit, we at Ayada Leads have made it our mission to help support New American women and women in general run successful campaigns for public office, be it for school board, city council, or even for the US congress. Here are just some of the many inspiring women we have worked with and supported in their political endeavors when running for office, and who are paving the way for many other New Americans and women of color to get involved in politics: Political Nonprofits Minneapolis-St Paul MN
Perhaps the most well-known politician associated with Ayada Leads is Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who became the first Somali-American member of Congress in the United States, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota, and the first woman to wear a hijab on the congressional floor. Before being elected as a U.S. Representative in the House of Representatives in 2018, she was elected as the first Somali-American State Legislator as a Representative for Minnesota District 60B in 2016. Omar has been a champion for progressive policies like creating a $15 Minimum Wage, cancelling Student Loan Debt, and helping to implement a Green New Deal.
Another inspiring New American woman who we’ve had the pleasure of working with is Representative Hodan Hassan. Hassan ran for the Minnesota Legislature as a first-time candidate in the 2018 midterm election. Before she became a Representative for the State of Minnesota, Hassan also worked as a clinical social worker and community activist. In the Minnesota House of Representatives, Hassan is the Assistant Majority Leader--the first Somali woman ever to fill this role.
Another woman of color and New American woman that we at Ayada Leads have worked closely with is Nadia Mohamed. Mohamed ran a successful campaign and won her 2019 election for the St. Louis Park City Council with 63 percent of the vote. By working on the city’s Multicultural Advisory Committee, Mohamed realized that her voice was a needed one at the decision-making table. Nadia is the first Somali woman, the first Muslim person, and the youngest person ever elected to the City Council at 23 years old.
