Who’s Eligible To Run For Office?

However, there are certain eligibility requirements that need to be met in order to run for office. Candidate Eligibility:


Refer to the chart below to see what the various eligibility requirements are for various office positions. All of the information provided below is from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.


For All Candidates:

  • Must be eligible to vote in Minnesota

  • Must have not filed for another office in the upcoming election

  • Must be 21 or older

  • Must have been a resident in their district for at least 30 days prior to the general election

For Major Party Candidates:

  • Must have participated in the party's most recent precinct caucuses

For United States Senator Candidates:

  • Must be a resident of Minnesota

  • Must be at least 30 years old

  • Must be a citizen of the United States for at least 9 years

For United States Representative Candidates:

  • Must be a resident of Minnesota

  • Must be at least 25 years old

  • Must be a citizen of the United States at least 7 years

For Governor or Lieutenant Governor Candidates:

  • Must be at least 25 years old

  • Must be a resident of Minnesota for at least 1 year prior to the general election

For State Judicial Officer Candidates:

  • Must be licensed to practice law in MN

For State Senator or Representative Candidates:

  • Must be a resident of Minnesota for at least 1 year prior to the general election

  • Must be a resident of their district for at least 6 months prior to the general election

For County Sheriff Candidates:

  • Must be a licensed peace officer in Minnesota

For School Board Member Candidates:

  • Must not be a predatory offender
